Pen & Ink Work

Working with Pen & Ink creates interesting problems that I like to solve. I usually like to work faster than Pen & Ink allows (charcoal and acrylic dry fast!), so I find I have to SLOW DOWN and figure out the entire picture before I begin working in this medium.

For those of you who don't know - the ink wash goes down first (that is, the shadows and dark areas), and the highlights are left blank. Then details are added with a Technical Pen. Finally, additional layers of wash are added where needed - and then on some pieces conté crayon (the orange color) is added for interest.

The tiger rolling in the snow ("Snow Day") also had white acrylic 'sprayed' over the finished piece to become snowflakes. The original of this piece is now in a doctor's office in Joplin, Missouri.
